Appendix 3:
How to Make a Lid
1. Make a square frame with interior dimensions of 600 mm x 600 mm and with a height of 70 mm.
- Place the frames on top of a sack or paper on a level floor.
- Place the wooden ring with the larger side on the bottom, exactly in the middle of the frame. (Important: the wooden ring must be the same one that you used for making the container.) The ring must be covered with grease to prevent it from sticking.
2. Fill the mould with concrete, using a mix of 1 : 2 : 4 (cement : sand : crushed stone). Cover with wet sack.
3. When the concrete is hard, remove the wooden ring and the frame. You now have a mould to produce the lid.
Making the Lid
4. Turn the concrete mould over so that the narrower opening is on the bottom.
- Place the mould on a sack or paper. Cover the concrete mould with grease.
- Fill the mould with a concrete mixture using a mix of 1 : 2 : 4 (cement : sand : crushed stone). Place a steel bar (6 mm thick), bent into the shae you wish, into the concrete. The bar will be the handle of the lid.
5. Cover with a wet sack and leave for 5 days. After 5 days, remove the lid from the mould.
